Scrivener has been the serious writer's answer since 2007, and for a lot of people it still is. This page is not an argument that it is bad software. It is the comparison we would want if we were choosing, written by the people who make the other one — so read it that way and check the parts that matter to you.

Where Scrivener wins

You buy it once. $59.99 and it is yours. Over three years our Basic tier costs about $178. If you write on one machine, never need a second person in the file, and do not want AI anywhere near your draft, Scrivener is straightforwardly cheaper and you should buy it.

It works with no internet. Scrivener is a desktop application with your project on your own disk. We run in a browser and need a connection. On a train, on a plane, in a cabin — that is a real difference, and it is the one we cannot argue with.

Compile is deeper than our export. Scrivener's Compile is close to a typesetting system: you can build your own formats, control every level of the hierarchy, and produce output we do not attempt to match. If you self-publish and care about the exact shape of the finished file, that is a serious tool.

It has eighteen years of ecosystem. Templates, tutorials, courses, forum answers to almost any question. We have three guides and a support inbox.

Where we win

It takes minutes to learn, not a week. This is the complaint we hear most about Scrivener and it is not unfair — the Binder, the Inspector, Collections, Compile and the metadata system are a genuine curriculum. Ours opens in a browser and the corkboard, the chapter list and the page are all visible at once on the first screen.

Nothing to install, on any machine you sit at. Open a browser and your manuscript is there, mid-sentence. No licence to move, no syncing a project folder through Dropbox, no second purchase for a second platform — Scrivener's Mac and Windows licences are separate products.

An AI partner that reads your story, when you want one. Ours works on your own characters, places and plot points rather than generic advice, it is an optional $4.95/mo add-on, and nothing it suggests enters your manuscript until you accept it. Scrivener has no AI at all, which for some writers is the feature.

Two people can write in the same project. Co-Writer hands the pen back and forth so only one of you can type at a time, and Writing Groups share a whole project with notes and a group chat. Scrivener has no multi-author mode.
