Where Final Draft wins
It is what the industry runs on. When a production office asks for a script, they mean an .fdx that opens correctly in Final Draft. We write .fdx and it opens — but Final Draft is the thing everyone else's workflow is built around, and that is worth paying for once you are inside that workflow.
Production features we do not have. Scene tagging, production reports, deeper revision modes and coloured page management, alternate dialogue, the whole apparatus a script needs once it is being shot. We do revision locking with the standard coloured revision marks. We do not do the rest.
It is a one-time purchase. $199.99 is steep, but it is once. Spread over a long career it is not the expensive option.
Where we win
$4.95 a month against $199.99. For a first script, a spec, or the four drafts before anyone else reads it, the difference buys a lot of nothing-in-particular. If the script gets somewhere, buy Final Draft then — you will export a clean .fdx and carry on.
Prose and screenplay in one place. Most people who write scripts also write something else. Novels and short stories here get real standard manuscript format with correct pagination, in the same studio, on the same account. Final Draft is a screenwriting application.
The story tools around the script. A Story Map for characters, places and plot points; a corkboard of index cards you can reorder; chapter and scene fields for POV and goal; an AI partner that works from your own story when you are stuck. Final Draft has a beat board and outline tools, but the surrounding apparatus here is broader.
